76ers' Star Embiid's Eye Injury

What is an "orbital fracture"? As the Sixers fight it out to advance in the NBA Playoffs, one of our star players is suffering from an orbital fracture. Hopefully, he will make it back for the next game. What is an orbital fracture? The eye is protected by the skull in the orbital socket. The bone is relatively thin along the bottom and nose side.

An orbital fracture is a fracture of the bone surrounding the eye.

Although there may be a cut along the eyebrow, the upper eye socket bone is very thick. Our skulls have evolved to do a good job protecting our eyes from overhead trauma (think caveman club). It looks like we haven't quite evolved to protect us from an elbow on the basketball court though! Get well soon Mr. Embiid!
